This morning I weighed 198 lbs. The first time I’ve weighed less than 200 lbs. for 25 years. I have more energy, can tie my shoes by just leaning over and I generally feel a whole lot better.
Several months ago Franca and I watched a film called, “That Sugar Film.” See The Film Made by a young man from Australia, Damon Gameau, the film explores the effects ingesting sugar has on humans. It’s not a long film, costs 99 cents and is well worth the time spent watching it. January 15, 2016 I weighed 245 lbs. When I saw that figure on the scale I realized I had to do something. I didn’t want to be “an old fat man.” But, I didn’t know what to do. In the interim I started the attempt to just eat less and that helped a bit but I still couldn’t drop below 235 lbs. Then we saw this film and I decided to never eat “added sugar” again. I really thought I had about a 50/50 chance of pulling it off. I mean, I liked sugared products; ice cream, donuts, candy. But I was amazed that after about a week I really didn’t care if I was passing up added sugar. And now I can taste sugar in very small amounts, a necessary thing to do because manufacturers put sugar in EVERYTHING! For instance, there are 32 brands of crackers in my local grocery store. Two of them have no added sugar. In general the “interior” of the grocery is 80% products with added sugar. I discount the natural sugars in fruit, milk, etc. and ignore fat to a great degree, all within reason.
Won’t belabor the point. But, cutting out added sugar is much easier than I thought it was going to be. Liberating!
